Poor Hendrix Bar Or Restaurant Restaurant Review:
Comfortably ensconced in two spaces of a restored historic commercial building, Poor Hendrix, named for owners Aaron (an alum of many fine restaurants) and Jamie Russell’s pet rescue pit bull, presents a simply decorated interior that relies on warm lighting, varied paintings and a mix of textures from brick to woods. Local ingredients help shape the menu. Start with the buttery smoked trout spread on grilled bread. We like the French dumplings tossed with an assortment of fresh vegetables (rich and complex, the serving is plenty for two) and the poached cod topping a bed of preserved tomato, olives, chorizo and confit potatoes --- a cascade of Mediterranean flavors. In you are dining at the bar, go for the skewered dishes, such as a pair of Moroccan lamb sticks or chili-rubbed steak, best ordered rare (otherwise it comes medium). A generous lightly dressed salad with assorted thinly sliced radishes and shaved cheese adds substance. Savor a sweet ending, perhaps the deconstructed Heath bar or the chocolate-coffee mousse with bourbon caramel and a finish of crisped rice. The wide-ranging wine list reflects the Russells’ global tastes with many choices coming from Spain and France, but insist on a proper glass to enjoy them. Craft brews on draught, in cans and in bottles enhance the experience.
