THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Rebecca's Restaurant Review: This Santa Monica incarnation of Rebeccas bears little resemblance to its Venice forebear. Gone is the whimsical Frank Gehry interior with its giant stuffed crocodiles hanging from the ceiling. Though it offers a partial ocean view and a patio, this spot is more subdued, with neatly ordered tables and low, flattering lighting. What chef Bruce Marder did reinstate is the menu of Cal-Mexican food such as shrimp fajitas and chicken breast in toasted-peanut mole sauce. The food seems designed for tourists---its bold, crowd-pleasing chow. Our dinner started with greasy chips, but things did get better: we loved the ceviche, and both the duck chile relleno and beef-rib soft tacos were savory. More than 200 killer tequilas as well as potent drinks like the Mariachi Martini guarantee a festive vibe. On weekends, a supper menu is served until 1:30 a.m. |
