Road Runner, once one of the top Mexican restaurants on Kauai, has had a management change. The food is still good, but not quite on the same par as when founder Denis Johnston managed the kitchen. Chewy taro bread, sweet rolls, pastries and coffee are sold at the bakery window, while tacos, enchiladas and daily specials can be ordered throughout the day in the dining room. Both the baked goods and Mexican food use fresh, quality ingredients. Favorites are the Hawaiian fish tacos with pineapple chipotle salsa and the authentic chile relleno. Desserts change daily, as do the flavors of the delightfully refreshing agua fresca, a concoction of fresh tropical fruit juices. Friendly, informal service, but there’s no beer or wine to wash down this Mexican fare.
