In a suitably solemn and impressive room, high-ceilinged and with murals painted by past members of the Royal Academy, the restaurant has a slightly school canteen feeling, which is a shame given its excellent food. Perhaps the retro feel comes from the clientele---all very middle England and tweed, twin-sets and sensible shoes up from the country. They tuck in with vigour to a daily changing homemade soup with crusty bread, light quiches and salads and hot dishes like casserole of chicken. The cakes are superb. The whole place rather genteel.
