THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Sababa Restaurant & Lounge Restaurant Review:
This restaurant near the Long Beach/Orange County border is buried deep within a massive shopping center, but its hidden status gives the sleek, multi-level venue an air of mystery that works quite well in its favor. The downstairs area is an ideal spot to gather for drinks and live music. Patrons settle in upstairs to enjoy a menu by consulting chef Eric Greenspan (formerly of The Foundry on Melrose in L.A.) --- one that seamlessly blends New American cuisine with a pronounced Mediterranean influence. Start with an order of handmade falafel with tahini dip or stuffed Greek mushrooms topped with melted mozzarella, or even a traditional Israeli salad to share. The flavors of the Mediterranean can be abundantly explored through mains such as phyllo-wrapped prawns in harissa broth or braised lamb shanks immersed in a stew of potatoes, dates, carrots, raisins and prunes. There are also plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. If you’re looking for a relaxed dinner, take note: on Friday and Saturday nights, Sababa turns a little club-like after 9 p.m.
