Before the recent influx of Caribbean restaurants, there was Sabooor, a homey spot in Old City, serving the hearty, non-spicy foods of the Dominican Republic. Bright tropical tablecloths, cherry red chairs, and a friendly staff brighten the experience. Bring some wine and enjoy any dish with the exceptional shrimp or the equally good skirt steak. Deep-fried foods tend to be a bit heavy, but this is a starch-driven cuisine, so we must forgive the weightiness. The coconut pudding is a cinnamon-sprinkled delight, and there is always café con leche to make things even sweeter.
