About the décor: Tucked within the confines of a Garden Grove strip mall, this compact establishment is about as unassuming as Mexican restaurants get. It’s also a bit unique. Step inside and you’ll find colorful paintings and plaid tablecloths instead of the genre’s typical decorative ephemera.

Likes: Warm, friendly staff.
Dislikes: Crowded space.

Food & Drinks: Expect the place to be packed with patrons digging into the family-owned venue’s array of Mexican cuisine. Start the meal with a michelada or Mexican beer and a cactus salad or a bowl of plump pozole. The usual suspects like tacos and burritos are handled rather well here, as are other slightly rarer combination-plate anchors such as the massively thick sopes. Entrées include adventurous dishes as in whole fried tilapia as well as hearty items like the must-try chamorro: slow-cooked chunks of beef in a red chile sauce served with house-made tortillas, rice and the addictive peruano beans. Be sure to save room for flan or arroz con leche for dessert. Early risers can swing by and round up breakfast burritos or huevos con chorizo.
