Saigon 48 Restaurant Review:
Smack in the center of the Theater District, this chic-looking Vietnamese restaurant is a welcome (and affordable) sight among the not-so-memorable eateries that have set up shop in the neighborhood to catch non-discriminating pre- and post-show rumbling stomachs. Saigon 48's décor straddles the line between cool and tacky: magenta backlighting glows from the backs of the long banquettes that flank the narrow main room, while faux Euro electronic music seeps from the speakers. The menu, however, is not as daring. At least not on the surface. Classic Vietnamese dishes, such as pho (a tasty and popular soup served in a jumbo bowl), curry chicken and stir-fried vegetables might be yawn-inducing to those who are looking for culinary adventure, but Saigon's healthy approach means everything tastes fresh. The seafood dishes are where audacious eaters might find culinary nirvana: the steamed whole sea bass with ginger and scallion sauce tastes as good as it looks, and the fried sweet-and-sour snapper may have you snapping back to Saigon 48 for more.
