When you know a restaurant has the potential to excel, and the staff (family members) work hard to please, you may be disappointed when the quality isn’t always up to par. Saigon Gourmet won’t win any design awards with the homespun décor of a few Vietnamese trinkets and the big-screen TV dominating one corner, and the food is also homespun. Best bets are the above-average summer rolls and the delicious shrimp sour soup, good enough for seconds. Sometimes a dessert like fried bananas just appears on the table for free, but only sometimes.
