Shapiro's Delicatessen & Cafeteria Restaurant Review:

This New York-style deli at the edge of downtown draws patrons from across the city for its stacked sandwiches, hearty chicken dinners and some of the best noodle kugel around. Politicians, executives in suits, hourly workers and everyday Joes meet in the snaking cafeteria line, choosing from chicken and noodles, spaghetti and meatballs, stuffed cabbage and broiled fish. They're all dished up alongside green beans, potato pancakes, steamed cabbage and chicken soup with matzo balls as large as the bowl. Hot corned beef stacked high on rye bread is as legendary as the Reuben. Breakfast is a happening affair, whether the order is a toasted bagel and smear of cream cheese or scrambled eggs with lox or diced salami. Desserts, cleverly situated at the head of the cafeteria line, are tempting enough to try two, but if the choice is one, make it the cheesecake with fresh strawberries, the lemon cake or the carrot cake. Not sure what to order? Ask anyone standing in line, which most likely will be a regular or visitor from a nearby state returning for a Shapiro’s fix.
