THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Sparrow Restaurant Review:
Nesting in the old Watergate space atop Nob Hill, Sparrow is an elegant option in the French-Asian cuisine scene. Owner Steve Javellana also designed the space, warming it up with cherry floors, subtle lighting, and booths separated by filmy panels. The crowd is well-heeled and well-mannered---you can enjoy conversation without shouting, a refreshing rarity in dining these days. Chef Terry Lynch, formerly of Kingfisher and Mustards, offers creative combinations such as fritters of sea urchin, sweet corn and rock shrimp with ponzu-truffle sauce, and a seared foie gras “sandwich" on brioche with banana-chive cream and Thai chile jam. Main courses include grilled venison loin and tenderloin, grilled five-spice lamb T-bone and sautéed skate wing in a tamarind gastrique. You can also choose the six-course tasting menu or, if you’re daring, the kaiseki (chef’s choice). The wine list is extensive but well-chosen. For dessert, try the ice cream taster which features exotic flavors such as peppercorn, lemongrass and cardamom. Service is efficient, friendly and non-intrusive.
