THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Standard Restaurant Review

: Stylish, modern and still somehow cozy, Standard is by no means standard in looks or food. Even theatrical tricks like serving some main dishes in large copper pans at the table are met with delight and not that sinking feeling of bad food tricked out to please the eye more than the palate. Several fish, poultry and meat items are served in one of these contraptions, which seal in the aromas and moisture and induce "Ah!" moments as the covers are lifted from the pans. The restaurant's bento boxes are thick, partitioned glass platters with an assortment of meats and veggies that add up to ideal light dinners. Sweetbreads are a hit here, too, lightly sautéed and served atop a fluffy tower of scalloped potatoes. The seasonal menu always includes short ribs and corn fitters. The hand of chef Tim Byres shows clearly in the use of savory root vegetables, beans of all stripes, clean sauces based on pan juices and a restrained use of powerful herbs. Save room for desserts, including at least one order of the root beer granité float with mini apple pies.
