As the U Street Corridor gets tonier, Station 9---in the premises of a now-defunct post office---raises the culinary bar several notches. With its menu devised by chef Terrell Danley, who owns Creme restaurant a few doors away, the establishment is both upscale restaurant and elegant lounge, featuring not one but three bars and an Art Deco dining space. Some may come for the sophisticated ambience; others with more food sense will see that Danley’s menu is a winner. Appetizers run the gamut from a cream of broccoli soup to grilled calamari, and entrées are obviously inspired by ethnic cuisines. We recommend the peanut chicken---boned breast perched on a savory peanut sauce and accompanied by sautéed broccolini and cilantro---but there are ribs to consider as well. And here’s a chef who offers sides that reach beyond the mundane carrots and peas. How about baby bok choy or broccoli rabe? Sadly, the dessert menu is way too short, but if you fancy lemon meringue pie, you’ll celebrate Danley’s version: a warm lemon tart with a scoop of tart-sweet lemon sorbet and a cloudlike topping of barely sweet whipped egg whites. Come to dance and drink, if you want. But also come to eat.
