This is one of the older locations of Steak 'n Shake, relatively small with an emphasis on counter service where you can watch the grill guy create magic with a spatula. While not a strictly St. Louis chain, Steak n Shake is so different from the other burger palaces that it deserves a niche of its own. The gleaming black-and-white tile is part of a color scheme that dates to the '30s. watch the grill guy create magic with a spatula. These are flat-grilled burgers, thin and almost greaseless, available in various permutations. Chile is another tradition here, as is chile mac, also available in styles much like its Cincinnati cousins. French fries seem to have become paler over the years, but arrive, like everything else, scalding hot. Shakes don't come out of an extruding machine, either, but we'd advise saving space for the hot fudge sundae. There are other sandwiches and salads available, but why turn from near-perfection?
