THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Straits of Malaya Restaurant Review:
Welcome back, Lawrence Tam and the Straits of Malaya restaurant. We are glad that he has returned to town, back in his original location. In his absence---which must have created a Malaysian food vacuum---several Malaysian eateries opened up, teaching DC-ers about this Asian cuisine. Tam is cooking as busily as before, and though offering a somewhat limited menu---where is the rendang, chef Tam?---it does offer enough Malaysian goodies to please Asia-philes. We have eaten rooftop, a perfect place for watching the street action below, and indoors with its panda mural suggesting exotic Asia. And we go back for the kway teow and for his fiery laksa, a seafood and noodle soup that will warm every pore. Also recommended: the udang goreng berempah and the fried jack fruit for dessert.
