THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Strayfish Sushi Restaurant Review:

The Outer Mission has an unexpected little gem of a restaurant that's not a taqueria. This sushi restaurant has made its home in a former Wells Fargo bank, with a vaulted ceiling and a massive Tiffany-style stained-glass overhead light. There are candlelit tables in the main area, with a sushi bar in the back. The indigo walls feature rotating art shows, and a DJ on the weekend. Owner Ogawa Masato also owns Union Square's Sakana (which means fish'), so this offshoot is the fish that roamed away, practically to Bernal Heights. There are delicious non-sushi appetizers, like a fork-tender ahi tuna seared with a sesame crust, served atop greens with a feisty dressing. The maki rolls are inventive, like the crispy roll with asparagus tempura inside, sweet shrimp and tiny tempura bits, or try the fireball roll with spicy tuna, green onion and jalapeño tempura. Sashimi is nice and fresh, like toro or hotate (scallop), and served resting on a bamboo leaf in artistic presentations, with perhaps a little Mt. Fuji of daikon. Sapporo is on tap and there are unusual sakés to try as well. Don't miss the owner's inventive dessert: a dreamy cross between flan and cheesecake.
