If the number of dining options in Little Tokyo overwhelms you, this conveniently located sushi bar is a good place to know about. Its sushi chefs are skilled and friendly, and for those who don't want to sit at the long lacquered bar, a number of white linen-clad tables are available in the traditionally decorated, but smart-looking restaurant. The sushi menu is fairly predictable, but the fish is fresh and prepared with care, including salmon nicely ribboned with fat, seasonal octopus sashimi, toro and albacore. The scallop and ankimo are favorites here. You can also find tempura, oysters on the half-shell, grilled salmon or yellowtail collar, and steamed vegetables. Sushi Gen even offers natto, the gooey fermented soybean paste that is truly an acquired taste. A few high-end sakés are available to pair with your meal, or to enjoy while one waits, as there is almost always a line. Lunchtime offers a popular, inexpensive sashimi special that comes with miso soup, pickles and rice.
