Located along dreary Newport Boulevard, Sushi Island is a good spot for a reasonable Japanese-style lunch or dinner. The ambience is definitely Costa Mesa casual, with light woods and bamboo everywhere. SoCal sushi house staples abound on the simple menu. Look for California rolls and specialty rolls, sushi ranging from tuna and yellowtail to scallop and albacore, vegetable tempura, miso soup and various proteins prepared in a classic teriyaki style. Soft shell crab, when in season, is lightly battered and artfully flash-fried. The space is compact and the sushi bar is tiny, so reservations are recommended on weekends for parties of five or more.
