The original West Houston location of Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen still packs in the crowds, thanks to owner/chef Sylvia Casares, who has created a charming atmosphere. The space features a collection of world-spanning teacups procured from loyal customers. Hot tortilla chips and spicy salsa arrive quickly to satiate hunger while diners wait for the strong margaritas and creamy chili con queso to arrive. Everything is house-made and often from old family recipes. Combo plates are named for Texas border towns, such as the Del Rio, a platter with a crispy beef taco, beef enchilada, beans and rice. But the real stars are the array of enchiladas stuffed with everything from cheese to spinach and topped with ranchera sauce, chili gravy or poblano mole. Save room for the chocolate tres leches cake. Join the weekend throngs for tasty breakfast tacos or a steaming bowl of menudo.
