Szechuan Place Restaurant Review

: Chongqing native Xudan Koo brings the heat to the Conejo Valley with Szechuan Place, which is located in the back corner of Agoura Meadows Shopping Center and specializes in spicy, lip-tingling Chinese food. The space is rather plain, with six tables sporting cushioned burgundy backs, grey carpet, and white and mirrored walls. The only embellishment is the logo, a cartoon panda playing with a variety of peppers. Dishes utilize Sichuan peppercorns and chilies to build flavor. Start with cool, springy mung bean noodles, which are bombed with chile oil, crushed peanuts, scallions, raw ginger and minced garlic. From there, it’s just a matter of which protein sounds best, and your spice tolerance. Mild options include scrambled eggs with shrimp, but chicken wok-fried with dried chilies brings considerably more heat. Boiled fish filets are especially potent, with flaky sole joining nutty bean sprouts and cabbage sheets in a thick chile sauce. Be sure to keep plenty of white rice and ice water handy, or possibly a fire extinguisher.
