THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Taiyo Restaurant Review:
The former Makan rebranded as a ramen-focused establishment with moderate prices, as owners Michael Lo and George Yu (the chef) strive to establish their Decatur anchor. Situated within the city’s convention center hotel, the restaurant features a dramatic décor that’s modern and enhanced by Asian decorative themes. The open kitchen, bar and patio remain intact from the previous operation. The team sources hormone-free proteins and locally raised ingredients. Yu and company prides itself on the from-scratch stocks and broths that are the foundation of the cuisine. Small plate appetizers reprise the famous pork belly buns and wontons in chili oil. For a slight upcharge ($3) the ramen bowls may be shared, and each portion is artfully presented and graced with its own egg and toppings. As for the ramen bowls, we lament the loss of the duck version but celebrate the tonkotsu, with pork belly and a poached egg among the items enhancing a creamy two-day pork bone broth. The others include a seafood and a vegetable choice. Select “Flavor Bombs” to enhance the bowls for just a buck or two, or go all the way and splurge on extra toppings, including sea urchin. No desserts are available. Cocktails, Asian brews and hot tea are the best libations. Specials include "Ramen Mondays," when "Buy One, Get One Free" ramen is offered, and kids dine free Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. when one adult orders a meal.
