Small plates menus and tamales may not at first seem to have a connection, but at Tamal it works. This South of Market restaurant offers an almost international selection of inspired tamales as small plates for noshing or for appetizers before choosing from a menu of organic and seasonal Latin specialties. There are no chili-and-cheese tamales here. Instead try the shrimp tamale paired with butternut squash, Thai curry spices and a pineapple salsa. The Tamal Creole marries grilled vegetables with green mole and pumpkin seeds. Another combines Cuban-style roast pork with coconut-infused black beans and a cinnamon, honey and Spanish sherry mojo. Those partaking of entrées will be happy with their options---simple dishes like crab-filled empanadas and sweet plantain soup give way to the delightful chile rellenos complete with Laura Chenel goat cheese, Yukon Gold potato sopas, tuna tacos with horseradish and celery root slaw, and Sonoma quail in pomegranate sauce.
