Offering huge portions, affordable prices, and tasty and authentic Mexican food in a no-frills atmosphere, Las Calandrias is often considered by Marin residents to be on par with SF’s famous Mission taquerias. The usual fare is on the menu: quesadillas, tacos, burritos and nachos. But the highlight here is that in addition to carne asada (beef steak), carnitas (fried pork) and pollo asado (grilled chicken), diners can opt for more exotic meat fillings, like cabeza (beef head), buche (stomach pork) and lengua (beef tongue). Tacos al pastor come highly recommended, as does the steak burrito with salsa verde. Help yourself to complimentary chips and a respectable salsa bar while you wait. House-made menudo is also available on the weekends.
