THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Tara's Himalayan Cuisine Restaurant Review:

Tara's Himalayan Cuisine is a longtime local favorite restaurant in Palms, and its Eastside sibling, adjacent to USC, is popular with students and faculty. Both spots are casual and warm, adorned with colorful Nepalese lanterns and silk embroidery, Tibetan prayer flags and paintings of Mount Everest. Sometimes you might even see native Nepali women at a table hand-making momo, the juicy dumpling of the mountainous region. Steamed or fried, you can make a fine meal just of these alone, stuffed with chicken or vegetables, and imbued with distinctive Himalayan herbs and spices that aren’t quite like anything either Indian or Chinese. For another unique flavor, tuck into a bowl of hearty Sherpa stew with yak. This rich, earthy-tasting meat is spotlighted better in the yak chili (actually a sautéed dish with ginger, chile, tomato and onions). Chef/owner Tara Gurung Black hails from Nepal, but the sustainable, grass-fed yak comes from Colorado. Find more familiar Indian dishes here, too, including a chicken korma and lamb vindaloo, a lengthy list of savory vegetarian entrées, dosas, naan, and goat and jackfruit curry. Mango lassi cools the fire if you order spicy, or it makes a fine dessert. Also located at 10855 Venice Blvd., 310-836-9696.
