When A Taste of New York (Honolulu's first New York-style deli in years) opened, residents were thrilled to have pastrami sandwiches made with freshly sliced meat slathered with Russian dressing and huge wedges of densely sweet house-made cheesecake. Never mind the refrigerated case filled with all sorts of the deli meats people on the mainland take for granted but are rarely seen in the Islands. Building on the success of the deli and grocery, owners Sonny and Michele Acedo decided to expand and offer dry-aged Certified Angus Beef from famed Chicago purveyor Stockyards at dinnertime. This is not your let's-get-dressed-up-and-prepare-to-spend-$150-plus steak experience; it's the let's-go-in-slippers-and-shorts-with-a-bottle-of-good-red-grabbed-from-your-own-stash experience. The steak does not come cheap; it’s in the $30-$40 price range, but sides of tangy coleslaw (highly recommended), red-skin potato salad and green beans are just $5 each and enough to serve two to three easily. Nothing fancy, just great food served on butcher paper-topped tables with an easygoing aloha attitude.
