Longtime Chicago restaurateur Michael Taus, of the late Zealous, makes a strong comeback with Taus Authentic Food & Drink, inhabiting a sleek and minimalist setting with wall-to-wall windows overlooking Division Street in Wicker Park. It is centered on modern American cuisine with Taus’ signature focus on locally grown and produced foods. The eclectic menu is organized in sections, not in a linear appetizer-entrée fashion, and is meant to create a sharing, family-style dining experience. Choose from a selection of fresh oysters and classic beef tartare, seafood dishes like swordfish bouillabaisse and scallops with pork belly, and a wide variety of charcuterie and artisan cheeses. Starters include items like braised duck flatbread and seasonal salads. Under entrées, veal cheek “pot-au-feu” and fried chicken with lemon honey butter are winners. Don’t pass up the desserts. Taus has collaborated with pastry chefs to serve sweets like a simple yet elegant vanilla chocolate panna cotta with berry coulis, and the death by chocolate treat with flourless chocolate cake, milk chocolate mousse, chocolate meringue and Turkish coffee ice cream.
