Taverna Mercatto Restaurant Review:

Taverna Mercatto, the fifth installment in the Mercatto line of restaurants, is an ideal stop after sightseeing in the area or watching a game at the Air Canada Centre. With three family-style meals available, including whole fish, bistecca or chicken with accompanying roasted vegetables and herbed potatoes, this spot is affordable for two or more people, depending on appetites. Starters include beef carpaccio with pickled onions and arugula, or beets with burrata and almonds. But the grilled octopus, served over garlicky olive tapenade and Israeli couscous, is a highlight. Calamari is tasty, if ordinary, fried to crispiness, and accompanied by faintly flavored fennel and garlic crema. Lamb sausage and earthy golden beets are scattered around lemon-ricotta-stuffed ravioli. Squid ink pasta with clams is intricate with crunchy bone marrow breadcrumbs. Finish with a classic tiramisu or rich burnt caramel gelato for dessert. A very good list of Italian wines, with a handful of local Ontario selections, is also available.
