Housed in a modest storefront along Palm Canyon Drive, Thai Smile is one of those hidden gems and word-of-mouth destinations. With chipped paver tiles creating a grid on the floor and walls cloaked in worn-wood paneling, the décor looks more south-of-the-border than Southeast Asia. But this isn’t the type of place you gravitate to for the ambience; it’s the authenticity of flavors that makes it hum with regulars. Sharing culinary duties are husband-and-wife team Piriya “Mai” Prayongyam and Nicha “Noi” Charnchalerm, who have created a menu of flavorful Thai dishes. The tofu pad thai is well seasoned and features a medley of sautéed rice noodles with fried tofu, bean sprouts, scallions and crushed peanuts in a mild sauce. The “Sizzling Combo” gives you a taste of everything, with chicken, beef and shrimp tossed with mixed vegetables, again in a mild sauce. You can create your own dish, too, by choosing vegetables and adding fried tofu, seafood or meat. Sauces tend to be subdued to appease Western tastes, but you can ask for any dish to be prepared spicy or extra spicy. Finish off with the coconut ice cream, which doubles as both a palate refresher and dessert.
