Tortugas Homemade Pizza Restaurant Review:
When Carlos Vizcaino moved to Birmingham from Chicago, he brought deep-dish pizzas to the Deep South. Lunchtime customers in a hurry may enjoy a huge slice of the stuffed pizza quickly if they're willing to choose sausage-and-pepperoni, spinach-and-mushroom, or the carne special. Thin-crust options include a Wrigleyville, a Cubs fan favorite, with Italian sausage, smoked sausage, onions and green bell peppers. Tortugas has gluten-free options, too. Other offerings include tasty six-inch meatball subs and hearty homemade lasagna. Partially baked pizzas are a brisk business accommodating those who want to take some home to serve up hot. Whole cheesecakes --- yes, including a turtle variety --- may be taken out, if one calls a day ahead. Favorites include almond, coconut lime and coffee, and customers may suggest flavors they would like made. An updated beer list includes some local brews from Avondale and Good People. Décor leans to sports memorabilia, but there's a collection of turtles brought in by customers fond of Vizcaino, a tribute to the restaurant's name, which means "turtle" in Spanish. Service is friendly.
