Tsukushi Restaurant Review:

If you are looking for an authentic Japanese cuisine experience, the last place you might expect to find it is Midtown Manhattan, but Tsukushi manages to deliver just that. There is no menu, and no ordering; the Japanese cuisine is served exclusively in the omakase style (chef's choice). The waitstaff makes a habit of remembering regular diners' tastes and eating habits. The reasonably priced six-course meal may include appetizers like crispy edamame, eggplant simmered in dashi, or shu mai wrapped in sticky rice. Chopped pork belly salad, miso black cod, beef tongue and sashimi are a few of the entrées you might encounter. The wood-paneled, triangular-shaped room is comfortable and cozy, seating around 30 people. Behind the bar, the shelves are stacked with saké bottles, each labeled with a customer's name for return visits. And though regular patrons are indeed a big part of this discreet sushi spot's clientele (there's no sign outside, just tiny letters displaying the name on the awning), the chef and staff are welcoming to all.
