Udipi Cafe Restaurant Review:

Udipi Cafe in Duluth has a bright and cheerful interior, with an assortment of objets d'art adorning the walls. Although its menu draws some dishes from northern India, the restaurant specializes in South Indian-style vegetarian fare, much of which is made without dairy products. Other selections may be adjusted for vegan requirements, such as substituting tofu for paneer. Specialties are the dosai (thin crêpe-like pancakes) stuffed with a range of vegetables, including potatoes, lentils and onions; thali (assortments of small dishes served on a steel platter) and uthappam (thick pancakes with ingredients cooked into the batter --- think Indian pizza). One section of the menu is devoted to chaat, or street snacks, such as samosas. We like the rather spicy (but not wicked hot) soup known as "rasam," a South Indian specialty. The thin broth is aromatic and studded with whole spices. Baingan bhartha is a creamy textured dish of mashed, cooked eggplant prepared with onions and studded with fresh green peas. End the meal with gulab jamun, a type of fritter laced with syrup, or go for the almond halwa and the carrot halwa as they're not so sweet. No alcohol is served, and none is permitted. Opt for tea, non-alcoholic ginger beer or a mango lassi for an authentic and tasty experience that nicely complements the spices.
