Urbane Café is all about fresh, not fried. All ingredients are grilled, steamed, roasted or baked. And while the strip-mall location may at first seem drab, inside you’ll find a vivid space, lively and colorful. The eatery is popular with the lunch break crowd and shopping moms who go for a healthy alternative to the area’s fast-food chains; kids’ meals come with greens or salad fruit. California-style sandwiches, soups and salads comprise the menu. Grilled rosemary chicken is topped with roasted red peppers and melted provolone; the barbecued tri tip comes with pepper jack and chipotle aïoli. A protein-rich salad blends garbanzo beans, pecans, mushrooms, mozzarella and a corn-and-black bean salsa. Other locations include Camarillo (1855 E. Daily) and Oxnard (1750 E. Gonzales).
