La Jolla finally awakened to the joys of good Jewish deli when this plainly decorated, no-frills establishment opened on chic Fay Avenue. The menu devotes itself primarily to sandwiches, piled high New York-style and stuffed with corned beef or pastrami (both imported from the Big Apple), or with roast beef that is cured and roasted on the premises. The menu claims that Mabel's chopped liver is the best around, and who are we to disagree? Hot specials include tasty stuffed cabbages and old-fashioned roast chicken. Bear in mind that this restaurant observes strict Kosher food laws, and closes in observance of the Jewish Sabbath.
