Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room Restaurant Review:
In the nineteenth century, the Whitechapel Gallery was a high-toned, worthy and very necessary East End gallery bringing art to the largely Jewish, immigrant population. It was refurbished and reopened with a restaurant and bar. Angela Hartnett was brought in as consultant and the cooking has gone up a notch. Using British ingredients, expect a daily changing menu of small plates like crayfish, avocado and apple, and spicy peppered squid with shallot and chilli dressing. ‘Bigger Plates’ might include slow roast belly of pork with honey carrots, creamed leeks and roast shallot, a good pasta or pan-roasted hake with caponata and watercress. The café-bar is good for more modest dishes; the atmosphere at this important art gallery uplifting.
