Zhen Shanghai Restaurant Review:
Given the scarcity of good Asian restaurants in Mexico City, Zhen Shanghai’s appearance in 2006 was long overdue. A team of cooks from Hong Kong prepares opulent versions of conventional Chinese fare, such as whole red snapper with asparagus and black bean sauce; shiitake mushrooms with seasonal vegetables; and Peking duck. Among the dim sum, the steamed dumplings filled with jumbo shrimp are first-rate. The decoration is Hollywood Chinese---you can imagine Marlene Dietrich and Anna May Wong from Shanghai Express sipping cocktails here---and commensurately lavish to the high prices. At lunch, the restaurant tends to attract power brokers in business suits.
