New York City - Hotel Review

Happily Ever After in The Big Apple

Almost 30 years after choosing New York City as the location for its first hotel, Morgans Hotel Group introduced its second Manhattan property with the opening of the Mondrian SoHo in 2011. From Los Angeles to South Beach and now New York, the Mondrian brand continues to allow you to escape reality and step into a world of fantasy. As with previous Mondrian hotels — Mondrian Los Angeles with its Alice in Wonderland décor and Mondrian South Beach's Sleeping Beauty theme — the look of this NYC outpost was inspired by a fairy tale. Taking his cues from Jean Cocteau's 1946 film adaptation of "La Belle et la Bête," designer Benjamin Noriega Ortiz brings to life the classic story of "Beauty and the Beast."

This theme can be seen throughout the hotel, from large antique mirrors, crystal sconces and grand carpets with custom rose vine designs in corridors to all-white rooms with delicate blue accents. Other accommodation highlights include floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping city views, marble spa bathrooms with custom-designed fixtures, bright loft-like spaces, built-in chrome desks facing the skyline and vanities that double as wet bars. Although the décor transports you to a time without technology, high-tech offerings bring you back to the 21st century, with LCD HDTVs, iPod docking stations, Wi-Fi (for a fee) and iPads in the 270 guest rooms and suites, which include four Penthouse apartments.

Located in the lower lobby, the small fitness center provides guests with free-weights and cardio machines. Also, for guests of Deluxe rooms and above, Mondrian SoHo offers a one-day VIP pass to the nearby Equinox gym, as well as fifteen per cent off at The Spa at Equinox for all hotel guests. If you prefer an outdoor workout, complimentary bicycles are available on a first come, first serve basis.

After working up an appetite in the gym or exploring the city, guests can find nourishment at Isola Trattoria & Crudo Bar, located inside the hotel's 5,000-square-foot greenhouse. The menu features coastal Italian fare and focuses on locally sourced ingredients. Continuing the market-fresh theme is Mondrian SoHo's Soaked, a rooftop bar serving natural craft cocktails with a cityscape backdrop. If intimate nightclubs are more your scene, Mister H is the hotel's downtown nightlife concept with a Shanghai vibe enhanced with deep reds, eclectic accents, Chinese furniture and a feng shui design.

Although the lack of a business center could send travelers looking for other places to hang their suits, the function spaces prove to be a worthy option for small meetings and conferences (as well as weddings and other events). The multi-service Gallery, Gallery Terrace, Penthouse and Penthouse Terrace can each accommodate up to 100 guests, and state-of-the-art audio visual and telecommunications equipment are available, in addition to smart boards, electronic flip charts, laptops, cell phones and fax machines (upon request).

Whether your fairy tale NYC ending comprises retail, art or culinary adventures, the Mondrian SoHo's convenient location puts you on the edge of lower Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood (near Chinatown and Little Italy), which boasts more than 100 shops, 250 galleries and almost 200 restaurants. Other popular neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Nolita, the Lower East Side and Tribeca are within close reach.
