Clos LaChance Winery 2008 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
Santa Cruz Mountains, CA
Clos LaChance began as a hobby when winery founders Bill and Brenda Murphy decided
to plant a few rows of Chardonnay in their backyard. It turns out, this backyard vineyard
offered fairly ideal conditions for Chardonnay and the resulting wine was good enough
to release to the public. The first commercial vintage was 1992; in subsequent years, the
winery has grown from those backyard vines to over fifteen acres of vineyard. Today, in
addition to Chardonnay, Clos LaChance produces Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Zinfandel and a red blend.
The 2008 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay offers tropical aromas with just a touch of
sweet butterscotch and bread dough. Its flavors are pretty, with racy acidity yet luscious
tropical fruits and a touch of tart apple and pear. Oak influence brings a bit of spice as
well as reasonable length to the finish. Try it with grilled fish topped with tropical salsa,
pasta with seafood in a white wine cream sauce or a simple roast pork loin with apples.
The wine would also make a nice accompaniment to your turkey dinner later this month.
