A bottle of J Vineyards & Winery 2010 Hoot Owl Vineyard Viognier, our wine of the week

J Vineyards & Winery
2010 Hoot Owl Vineyard Viognier

Alexander Valley, CA

Founded in 1986 by Judy Jordan (who grew up in the Jordan Winery family), J is known as a leading American sparkling wine producer. But in more recent years, the winery has become renowned for its cool-climate, still wines. In addition to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, J produces Pinot Gris, Viognier, a dessert wine, vin gris and even a pear liqueur. The 2010 Viognier offers enticing floral aromas. Round in the mouth, its juicy flavors are of white peach, apricot and honeydew with hints of vanilla, anise and honeysuckle at the back of the palate. A spicy hit of white pepper and clove on the finish adds an exotic note. The wine is bright, crisp, almost spritzy, a style that will pair well with many summer foods. Try it with cold dishes like blanched asparagus in a sherry vinaigrette, deviled eggs or a watermelon and feta salad. The wine would also make a nice accompaniment to a bacon and leek quiche, cold roast chicken on a chopped herb salad or a selection of fresh and aged goat's milk cheeses.
