Founded in 1976 by Ren and Marilyn Harris, Paradigm is a bit of a Napa Valley pioneer.
Although the property was originally planted with the grapes popular in the region at the
time, the Harris family quickly realized that their vineyard was best suited to Bordeaux
varietals. Today, Paradigm is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot,
Petit Verdot and a little bit of Zinfandel. Despite the winery's popularity, Paradigm
has always kept production low (currently a total of about 6,000 cases) to help ensure
consistent quality. The 2008 Merlot is an impressively crafted wine. The nose offers an
interesting contrast between bright plum and cherry fruit and darker, earthier bramble and
cedar. The wine is well structured with bright acidity and a solid backbone of tannins. Up
front, red fruit is pleasingly restrained, making it a nice choice for pairing with an elegant
meal. Serve with hearty fish like a grilled halibut steak or try it with an herb-crusted
squab. Vegetarians might enjoy it with a ratatouille or other summertime vegetable and
herb casserole.
