Château Miraval in Provence

by Barnaby Hughes

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have had their year(s) in Provence. After leasing Château Miraval from then-owner Tom Bove for three years, the star couple made their stay permanent by purchasing the 1,000 acre Provençal estate outright in 2011. In 2012, Brangelina teamed up with the Perrin family, owners of Château de Beaucastel in the famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and makers of dozens of Rhône wines. In March 2013, Jolie and Pitt plan to launch the first Château Miraval Rosé to bear the names Jolie-Pitt and Perrin on the label. It’s produced from grapes grown on the estate’s certified organic vineyards.

No stranger to celebrity, Château Miraval was previously owned by Jacques Loussier, a French pianist known for his jazz renditions of classical music. Loussier installed a recording studio on-site that has hosted Sting, the Cranberries and Pink Floyd. It is to the latter band that the estate owes the name of its popular Pink Floyd rosé. Much earlier, in 1850, Joseph Lombot, the inventor of reinforced concrete, built the chateau’s spacious wine cellar.

In March 2011, we reviewed Château Miraval’s 2009 Clara Lua, a white wine from the Coteaux Varois appellation. We gave the $20 bottling a rating of 13.5/20, noting the wine’s strong citrus aromas, balanced, long-lasting apricot flavor and hint of almond on the finish.
