by Sophie Gayot

Chef David Myers closed the doors of Sona restaurant in 2010. Since it had been a GAYOT Top 40 Restaurant in 2007, we expected him to resurface somewhere else in the City of the Angels with another fine dining concept.

In the meantime, he opened Pizzeria Ortica in Costa Mesa, one of GAYOT’s 2013 Top 10 Orange County (CA) Pizza Restaurants. With the success of Comme Ça in West Hollywood, he got himself a prime location on the Las Vegas Strip for a second Comme Ça. The restaurant at The Cosmopolitan, complete with a terrace and views of the Eiffel Tower, earned him a spot on GAYOT’s 2011 list of the Top 10 New Restaurants in the U.S. Let us not forget his ventures in Tokyo: David Myers Café and SOLA.

Actor David Arquette with Sophie Gayot

by Sophie Gayot

We can all thank actor David Arquette for welcoming us to his beautiful Beverly Hills house for the 2013 Vintage Hollywood 12th Annual Wine & Food Tasting Event.

Some Los Angeles chefs offered delicious tasting bites like the scallop ceviche by littlefork, an array of grilled cheese sandwiches by chef Eric Greenspan, tuna tartare tacos by soon-to-open Del Frisco’s Grille in Santa Monica, and burgers by probably the best burger chain The Counter. Let’s not forget the oysters by Christophe Happillon‘s The Oyster Gourmet, and the savory finale of cheeses from the celebrated Cheese Store of Beverly Hills.

Italian cuisine restaurants have been popular in the U.S. for decades. And what better way to enjoy Italian food than accompanied by fine Italian vino? We recently enjoyed an evening of Italian wines at Valentino, Piero Selvaggio‘s Santa Monica restaurant that celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, as part of the Vino California celebration. Other events around town included dinners at Aventine Hollywood, Enoteca Drago and a Grand Tasting.

“In only its third year, Vino California has quickly become an iconic fixture on the national wine landscape,” said Letizia Miccoli, Executive Director of the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West. “We are thrilled to bring such an extensive taste of Italy to Los Angeles which is filled with experienced wine consumers and professionals that are eager to learn more about old world wines.”

We’ve been a fan of Stefan’s at L.A. Farm in Santa Monica since its launch almost four years ago. Chef Stefan Richter opened his restaurant after competing on season 5 of “Top Chef,” in which he was a runner-up. Monday night, we had the opportunity to sample his delicious new menu for summer 2013, as chef Stefan mingled with guests and posed for photos.

Since Cinco de Mayo falls on a Sunday this year, there’s even more reason than usual to celebrate at one of the LA-area restaurants that are hosting special events and promotions.

Both Border Grill locations are holding Cinco de Mayo celebrations from May 3-5 with beer and tequila specials. Santa Monica will also have a photo booth, while the downtown location is offering beer-wrapped hot dogs and a live DJ. Susan Feniger’s STREET is hosting a Cinco de Mayo Taco Night, featuring homemade tortillas by Border Grill as well as aguas frescas and margaritas. The tacos will include both standard and unique options like carnitas, carne asada, lengua, chicken pibil, beer battered shrimp, smoked octopus, chipotle jackfruit, beer battered okra.

Tequila-battered avocado with pomegranate vinaigrette

by Barnaby Hughes

I’ve had the pleasure of attending many wine pairing dinners, but recently was invited to my first Tequila pairing at Tortilla Republic in West Hollywood. Taking place on the third Wednesday of each month in a private dining room, the four-course dinners pair Mexican tapas with a line of Tequilas from a single distillery. I was fortunate enough to attend the inaugural dinner featuring Milagro Tequila. Executive chef Brendan Warren came out of the kitchen to introduce each of the evening’s dishes, which were paired with three of Milagro’s Tequilas. Reposado was served with Tequila-battered avocado, Silver with camarones and chorizo, Reposado with albondigas over herbed rice and Añejo with sorbet and fresh fruit. A glass of the restaurant’s sangrita, a non-alcohol mix of juices and spices, was provided as a palate cleanser between courses.
