Working in the world of chefs and restaurants, I see the name “Lexus” very often. The car company, which started with two luxury sedans in 1989, loves food. Over the years, it has become a sponsor of major culinary events throughout the country.


To reinforce that passion, the Lexus Culinary Masters team was created in 2011. Two new chefs have just been added to the circle: Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo from Animal restaurant on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. They joined Daniel Boulud, chef/owner of Daniel (one of GAYOT’s Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S. since 2004); Michael Chiarello, chef/owner of Bottega and Coqueta; Dean Fearing, chef/partner of Fearing’s restaurant; Christopher Kostow, executive chef of The Restaurant at Meadowood (one of GAYOT’s 2013 Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S.); Masaharu Morimoto, chef/owner of Morimoto restaurants; Michael Symon, chef/owner of Lola Bistro; and Michelle Bernstein, chef/owner of Michy’s.

If you head to the Italian restaurant Il Grano in West Los Angeles, and chat with chef Sal(vatore) Marino, you will have no doubt that he is in love with the tomatoes he grows at the restaurant and at his home garden. With the more than twenty varieties that he planted this year, he has so many different fruits at his disposal to create delicate dishes all around “pomodoro” that his inspiration is endless.

There were many events during the Third Annual Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival. It was not possible to attend of all them, so choices needed to be made. When I saw that Curtis Stone was hosting Lexus Live on Grand on Saturday, I did not hesitate to trade a quiet evening at home for a giant food and wine party with the Walt Disney Concert Hall as a backdrop.

After a nearly ten-year absence, international beach volleyball returned to American shores for the World Series of Beach Volleyball in Long Beach, CA, from July 22-28. Featuring both an International Federation of Volleyball (FIVB) grand slam event and a new “World Series Cup,” which pitted top international competitors against the best of the U.S. , the event drew out volleyball fans in droves to the picturesque Long Beach waterfront, which also hosted live music, street food and interactive booths throughout the week.

Chef David Myers closed the doors of Sona restaurant in 2010. Since it had been a GAYOT Top 40 Restaurant in 2007, we expected him to resurface somewhere else in the City of the Angels with another fine dining concept.


In the meantime, he opened Pizzeria Ortica in Costa Mesa, one of GAYOT’s 2013 Top 10 Orange County (CA) Pizza Restaurants. With the success of Comme Ça in West Hollywood, he got himself a prime location on the Las Vegas Strip for a second Comme Ça. The restaurant at The Cosmopolitan, complete with a terrace and views of the Eiffel Tower, earned him a spot on GAYOT’s 2011 list of the Top 10 New Restaurants in the U.S. Let us not forget his ventures in Tokyo: David Myers Café and SOLA.
