THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS, BUT WILL REOPEN JUNE 2015. For nearly eight decades this legendary Idaho ski resort has been a winter sports destination for people of all ages. Bald Mountain — affectionately known as Mount Baldy — summits at more than 9,000 feet and offers 64 runs. In addition, Dollar Mountain is ideal for beginning skiers and snowboarders, and the area also includes 25 miles of groomed cross-country trails, ensuring that all ski needs are met. As for where to stay, the Sun Valley Lodge is a window into local history. Intended to serve as the centerpiece for the ski resort when it opened in 1936, this property's low-key atmosphere suits its surroundings. It is especially ideal for families, with its adjoining glass-enclosed swimming pool, game room and six-lane bowling alley. On-site Gretchen's serves hearty, homey meals, while Duchin Lounge is famous for its Sun Valley Margarita and signature HBR (hot buttered rum).
