Hawaii's old-guard of top restaurants have never been spaces that make you want to linger. The arrival of 808 Kapahulu raises the bar, with big windows open to the street, seductive chenille banquettes and sexy lighting. While the food isn't earth-shattering, the menu offers an array of contemporary plates and snappy cocktails that make 808 worth frequent pit stops. Lotus-root patty topped with sautéed Kahuku shrimp, a sensuous avocado-and-salmon mash served in the fruit's skin, filet mignon in an extra-earthy mushroom sauce, and rack of lamb slathered with a quasi-pesto make for good grazing while sipping Calpico-and-shochu sours. And the best thing: 808 is open until 2 a.m.
