In theory, a neighborhood joint sounds great: friendly service, a come-as-you-are attitude, reasonable prices and a variety of food to choose from. But more often than not at a place like this, one or more parts of the equation fail to deliver. But that’s not true here. Stop by at lunchtime and grab one of the griddled panini---the prosciutto with Fontina and apples is a winner---or a burger. Come dinner, Italian family recipes sustain. Try the gnocchi with caramelized squash, fusilli with fennel-spiked sausage and slow-braised short ribs with shallot polenta. Lots of hangover-helpers are served during brunch, such as frittatas and Italian-style eggs with apple wood-smoked bacon.
