Miles away from the epicenter of ethnic eating (that is, downtown DC), Aroma in Olney surprises patrons both with its faithfulness to authentic Peruvian flavors and with its menu crafted to incorporate traditional dishes with a modern edge. Take, for example, the ahi cebiche with avocado, ginger and soy sauce, a combination that flashes back to the Chinese influences on Peruvian cuisine. Appetizers, served as tapas, include the chef’s version of potatoes with chorizo and an Americanized wings dish with a Cuban mojo sauce. Bigger dishes include a chicken and potato stew, mixed seafood, and a fish dish infused with both Peruvian and Chinese influences. But most people will find the black bean burger with its roasted onions and peppers meal enough, especially with a house-made dessert as the conclusion. Don’t miss the alfajores (cookies with a dulce de leche filling) or the house flan. Aroma lists an interesting selection of South American wines, and for the hearty drinker, assorted Peruvian-style cocktails that will knock you flat.
