Bernhard's German Bakery & Deli Restaurant Review:

Bernhard Blecken came to Atlanta for a visit, and drawn by the warm weather and reception he received, went home, sold what he couldn't pack, and moved there. His simple bakery with an attached bare-bones dining space is packed with beautiful goods and items imported from Germany. Traditional German breakfast plates of deli meats and cheeses launch the day. Lunch could be a frikadellen sandwich, perhaps the original hamburger, a flattened patty of ground meats topped with mayonnaise and lettuce. Patak, an Eastern European purveyor of locally made sausages and cured meats, supplies the brats, smoked liverwurst, tea wurst and other treats. In addition, you'll find house-made sauerbraten and red cabbage frozen to take home for an authentic German supper with spätzle. Choosing dessert may be difficult, but we enjoyed the Beesting, a custard-filled almond-topped cake and a nougat ring enrobed in dark chocolate. Take home a Sacher torte for a fancy dinner finish. Myriad breads include many that are certified organic, and several are wheat and yeast free.
