You may not have heard about this contemporary sushi spot in an easy-to-ignore Skokie shopping plaza. But Makisu has steadily gained interest among modern maki enthusiasts. Partner David Kim (Sushi Ai, Swordfish, Wildfish) knows what he’s doing, having a knack for opening popular spots with artfully plated Asian cuisine in unlikely places. We like the enveloping leather banquettes that line the open, wood-trimmed space. But more than that, we enjoy the jalapeño-topped spicy tuna over “crunch.” The sashimi? It’s pristine. Entrées from the kitchen do not disappoint either, particularly the spicy grilled shrimp in garlic sauce served with sautéed vegetables.
