Mark and Elizabeth Mendez (ex-Carnivale) opted to go it alone with this rustic West Loop Spaniard, a wine bar with warm wood details, exposed brick walls and Edison bulb lighting. Then there’s the walnut-topped bar, which turns out not just Spanish wines but a notable selection of sherry. Start off with a plate of cheeses (sourced from Spain and Wisconsin) or charcuterie as well as snacks like marinated olives, anchovies or tomato bread. The menu of small and medium plates (meatballs, kale salad, grilled octopus) is bolstered by daily specials like lobster paella on Sundays. For dessert, there’s salted caramel pudding and churros with chocolate sauce.
