: Azul Tequila, a hidden gem located in a nondescript strip mall, melds Mexico’s central interior dishes with Austinite’s taste buds. The soups could be found in a roadside “comida corrida”: mole de olla (beef and vegetable with tomatillos) is the real thing; pozole Mexiquense, a red chile and hominy pork soup served with radishes, onions, avocado and oregano, is authentic; and the mole is created from a family recipe. In addition, don’t miss the albondigas en chipotle (Mexican meatballs) or the cabrito al maguey, goat meat marinated with guajillo chile spices and slow cooked on maguey leaves. Seafood selections, representative of both coasts of Mexico, include a pescado zapoteco, fish sautéed in dried pepper flakes and spices and topped with shrimp smothered in a garlic sauce. Tortillas and salsas are house-made. A Tex-Mex menu is offered, too, for those who aren't ready to brave the more adventurous dishes. For dessert, there’s the universally embraced homemade flan. The bar boasts more than 20 different kinds of tequila, and the margaritas are generously poured; a Bloody Maria bar is available at brunch. |
