Across 12th Avenue from the funky 12th & Porter restaurant is its more mature sibling, Café 123. Wood floors, a fireplace, brick walls, a gleaming Prohibition-era mahogany bar and grown-up food all intertwine against a soundtrack of Sinatra. Ultra-dim lighting adds a mysterious, romantic air. If only things could come together in the kitchen the way they do in the dining room. Unfortunately, owner Jody Faison has not been able to effectuate this since the restaurant's earliest days. In recent months, the menu has shifted from nouveau Southern to quasi-Continental to fusion confusion. The only thing that has remained consistent is the overall increase in prices. As it stands, we recommend this place for its atmosphere and live nightly entertainment---when it comes to dining, you take your chances.
